A Dream of Predators and Prey

For some reason I think
Of water in desert lands. The
Slow suck and pull of it
Down and
Down to some sweet hidden lake
Below. While

Out there by the break of
Trees you can just see a
Shadow pacing and pawing
Perhaps at some ripped up
Side of a tree. But

Still that image. The water.
The heat. The barren, dull,
Quiet, absolute quiet, of
Hot lands in cold
Months when all we can see

Is something out there.
Something out there.

I feel you’ve painted such a picture here, I can see a desert bowl with the last of the water being sucked down through the earth. Really enjoyed this piece; oh; and the possibility of a predator on the break of trees.

An intensely evocative poem. That ending leaves me breathless. I feel the predator on my trail…smiles.

It’s as if the water fears the predator, too.

Vividly written. As we have cougars prowling these parts these days, I envisioned bear, or cougar out among the trees in your poem. Likely a bear, since it was pawing the side of a tree….or maybe a Sasquatch!

That something out there can occupy the mind to total distraction – sometimes fear and loneliness hunt us down and leave us empty..such crystallised..distilled poetry

This creates a marvelously ominous mood. I really like the way you broke the lines.
